Destined to Die

My time here on Earth could come to an end today, or it could come in 40 years. All I can say that should American healthcare change, it will very much be sooner than later.

I have been a Type One Diabetic since I was 15. I lost my right foot to an infection back in 2011, and almost two years to the day, I had a double bypass.

I now face the fact that I have precancerous polyps in my throat.

I found out over a year ago, unfortunately, my income level is too high to afford state aid; and I do not make enough to pay the co-pay and meet the deductible. I have insurance, but if I cannot afford those copays, what is the point?

So when I see Trump and the GOP brag about killing Obamacare, in reality, they are talking about killing me.

I spend a lot of time up nights wondering what I and millions of others did to make the GOP hate me, but I haven’t a clue. The only thing that comes to mind, is I am expendable. By needing medical care to be productive, I am what the Tea Party calls a welfare ward of the liberal nanny-state.

scrooge care

“If they are going to die, let them be quick about it and decrease the surplus population.”

To the Tea Party run Republican Party, I am a drain on the system. Money that the state is potentially going to need to spend if I cannot meet my burden is a tax cut that was never given.

It has gotten to the point, that I am seriously investigating moving to Canada.

Think about that for a moment. A person that is proud to be an American, is forced to consider gaining Canadian Citizenship just to have the care he needs to survive.

Compassionless Conservatism

We live in a nation that is supposedly Christian. And yet, the Christian Right always seems to find a way to avoid Matthew 25, 34-36:

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

That should be the goal of our nation. We are beyond a doubt the most inventive, richest, and most determined people on the planet. Becuase the whole world chooses to come here for the American dream, we are the people of ambition. The people of ideas.

We once were also the people of compassion.

In my case, I try desperately to be a productive member of society, but I must limit myself. The education I have is useless without the body to use it. The longer I go struggling to stay healthy is a loss to the nation as a whole.

Struggles and Symptoms

My wife is a High School Teacher that teaches Spanish, a highly sought after specialty in this day and age. My wife has an advanced Thyroid disease. Without her pills, she tires easily and puts on weight that can cause other problems.

I need vials of insulin that without insurance would cost me nearly $300 a pop. I need 3-6 a month depending on how I am feeling. I use 8-10 blood glucose strips that a vial of 100 can start at $35.

When I left education myself I lost my insurance. I was looking at going on my wife’s insurance, but the premiums would go from $300 a month to $700.

For us, that was the house note and the house insurance.

When the ACA was passed, 28 million Americans suddenly had hope.

They had hope that their loved ones could see a doctor.

They had hope that with better health they could become productive members of society once again.

They had hoped to be alive long enough to see their kids grow up and have kids of their own.

Most of all they hope that the pain and suffering caused by their disease would end.

There was a light at the end of the tunnel.

Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump, and every Republican that instead of working to make healthcare better for all, did the exact opposite.

In doing so, they not only put millions of Americans in tough medical positions,

They extinguished our hope of a better future.

The least Christian thing they could do.
